Under the direction of typography professor, Mark Laughlin, students were challenged to create a graphic 50-page book on a topic of their choosing. Included in this book would be a typographic system of running text, chapter and page structure, and image captioning. Students were encouraged to tackle unique chapters that dealt with different topics under the umbrella of their overall subject.
I utilized Wes Anderson’s classic film, The Grand Budapest Hotel, to approach my book. Inspired by the color system, design, and composition of his film, I divided my book into topics that covered just that and more. Pulling together text from articles and critique of the movie, I created a running text that focuses on the making of the film, the colors, characters, and graphic design within the film.
My typographic system consists of a few notable elements. Adobe Garamond makes up the running text while Neue Helvetica Compressed is applied to chapter titles and pull quotes, hinting at vintage cinematic advertising. Lastly, I included the typeface LFT Etica Mono to round out the system of type and hint at the typewriter type so commonly seen in the film. This monospace typeface is used in labeling specific film stills.
